Careers in the Arts Panel

ADMISSION: Free with Museum admission; youth 18 and under always free. This event is open to anyone ages 13-20. No reservation required.

Learn about the wide variety of jobs in the arts from professionals working in the field, and hear stories about their unique paths from student to career. Through conversations and presentations teens can ask questions, find inspiration, and get advice from artists and arts administrators as they share their stumbles and successes.

Sadie Barnette

Whether in the form of drawing, photography, or large-scale installation, Sadie Barnette’s work relishes in the abstraction of city space and the transcendence of the mundane to the imaginative. Born and raised in Oakland, California, she earned her BFA from CalArts and her MFA from the University of California, San Diego. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States and internationally and is in the permanent collections of museums such as LACMA, Berkeley Art Museum, the California African American Museum, Studio Museum in Harlem (where she was also Artist-in-Residence), Brooklyn Museum, and the Guggenheim. She is the recipient of Art Matters and Artadia awards and has been featured in publications such as The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Artforum, and Vogue. She lives in Oakland, CA and is represented by Charlie James Gallery in Los Angeles.

Jackie Im

Jackie Im is a curator, writer, and editor based in Oakland, CA. She is the co-founder and Director of Et al. and Et al. etc. in San Francisco, alongside Aaron Harbour and Kevin Krueger. She also currently serves as the Associate Curator at the San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC) Galleries. She has organized exhibitions at the Wattis Institute of Contemporary Art, Queens Nails (SF), The Lab (SF), Important Projects (Oakland), Royal NoneSuch Gallery (Oakland), Holiday Forever (Jackson Hole, WY), and SFAC Galleries. Her writing has appeared in Fillip MagazineArt PracticalCuriously DirectSFAQ, and various exhibition catalogues. She holds a BA in Art History from Mills College and a MA in Curatorial Practice from California College of the Arts.

Terisa Siagatonu

Terisa Siagatonu is an award-winning poet, teaching artist, mental health educator, and community leader born and rooted in the Bay Area. Her presence in the poetry world as a queer Samoan woman and activist has granted her opportunities to perform and speak in places ranging from the White House (during the Obama administration) to the UN Conference on Climate Change in Paris, France. The most memorable moment in her career was receiving President Obama’s Champion of Change Award in 2012 for her activism as a spoken word poet/organizer in her Pacific Islander community. With numerous viral poetry videos garnering over millions of views collectively, Terisa's writing blends the personal, cultural, and political in a way that calls for healing, courage, justice, and truth. A Kundiman Fellow, her work has been published in Poetry Magazine and has been featured on Button PoetryCNN, NBCNews, NPR, Huffington Post, Everyday FeminismThe Guardian, BuzzFeed and Upworthy.
